James Carl Nelson


James Carl Nelson is a leading World War I military historian. He is the author of I Will Hold: The Story of USMC Legend Clifton Cates, from Belleau Wood to Victory in the Great War (Dutton Caliber 2016), Five Lieutenants: The Heartbreaking Story of Five Harvard Men Who Led America to Victory in World War I (St. Martin’s 2012) and The Remains of Company D: A Story of the Great War (St. Martin’s 2009).

I Will Hold received the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation 2017 Colonel Joseph Alexander Award for Biography. The Remains of Company D received an Editor’s Choice Award from Booklist.

Nelson lives in Minneapolis.
